Overview

One of my favourite fantasy races, if not the most, it has always been and will always be the Dwarves.

Okri initially began as a face study, but my interest and passion quickly evolved it into a full character design. I happily gifted him with the proper weapons and the muscle mass to wield them, honouring his name.

The beard is a very distinctive facial feature, but it's particularly special when it comes to Dwarves. Aware of this, I worked through an in-depth exploration of Hair-cards.

I experimented with various approaches, revisiting and refining the facial hair on multiple occasions to make further improvements.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the main challenges was to make it visually credible and for that I found that placing micro details of skin and other textures on the highpoly model rather than in the later texture itself was the right call.

Maintaining a reasonable polycount was certainly another challenge I had to face knowing that the hair cards were going to significantly add to the total amount.
